The virtualization software that we currently recommend for running StatGenLab is called VirtualBox. We provide step-by-step instructions below:

Downloading and Installing VirtualBox

  1. Download the latest installer for your platform from http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads. [Screenshot]
  2. Run the installer the usual way for your platform.
    • Install the device (e.g. USB, network) software when prompted.
  3. Download and install the matching VirtualBox Extension Pack from http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads. [Screenshot]
  4. Need help? Check out this HOWTO for more detailed installation instructions.
    • NOTE: Some of the screenshots and documentation on this page may refer to older versions of VirtualBox. Unless otherwise instructed in e-mail, you should download the latest version.

Downloading StatGenLab

  • Download with your web browser the usual way. [Mirror 1]
    • File size: 2.1 GB
    • MD5 checksum: b100a883c780728fce60eff3a3d9de1a [md5sum howto]

System Requirements

  • A 64-bit CPU with hardware virtualization support (e.g. VT-x).
  • At least 4 GB of RAM.
    • You can get by with less RAM, but by default, StatGenLab takes 2 GB, leaving 2 GB for your host OS.
  • Depends on what you want to do, but at least 5 – 10 GB of free disk space to comfortably run with the included example data.

Importing StatGenLab in VirtualBox

  1. Run VirtualBox the usual way for your platform.
    • On Windows, you can double-click the Oracle VM VirtualBox shortcut on your desktop.
  2. Select File -> Import Appliance, then click on the small folder icon to browse to where you have downloaded the StatGenLab OVA file. [Screenshot]
    • Or, alternatively, you can type the full path.
    • Click Next.
  3. Double-check the appliance settings. Most users won’t need to change a thing.
    • Reduce the amount of RAM if you don’t have enough to share with the guest OS from your host OS.
    • Un-check any devices you do not have (e.g. DVD drive).
    • Don’t forget to check “Reinitialize the MAC address of all network cards”. [Screenshot]
    • Click Import. This should take less than 5 minutes for most computers, but may take up to 15 minutes or more depending on the hardware.
